Chapter 9 of Nehemiah was filled with a direct address of the sin issues of Israel’s past, the problems that created, and especially their individual responsibility before God. Chapter 9:2 began with the people “separating themselves form all stranger, and stood and confessed their sins, and the iniquities of their father.” The chapter ended with the people saying, “because of all this we make a sure covenant”. The people gave their total devotion to God. This devotion is laid out in chapter 10 and it is complete. Their commitment of devotion permeated all aspects of their lives. It was not a partial offering of their heart, but giving God freedom in all aspects of their life.
This devotion was formal. It was made by the leaders, on behalf of the people.
