Often when this passage is observed, we start in verse 7 as if begins 10 imperative statements. We love imperative commands because they are clear. Often, we just want to be told by God what to do and here in James 4 God does just that. He tells us to submit ourselves to God, resist the Devil, draw near to God, cleanse our hands, purify our hearts, lament (be afflicted), mourn, weep, be serious, and humble ourselves before God.
