Matthew 5:1-12
Being a Disciple

Now that Jesus has explained that the sermon is for true believers, or disciples, He embarks on a description of a disciple.  How does the disciple behave in a fallen world?  What does a disciple of God look like in character?  This description is not made of nine different people, but one disciple.  The description is not natural to mankind either.  The qualities of a disciple run counter to the natural man, or the flesh.  Therefore, a disciple of God is distinct in their representation, and this transformation can only come through the power of God.  Salvation is necessary in order to produce a spiritual response that mirrors God’s character.
